In 1968, three ag teachers purchased the land where The Leadership Center campus is located. They borrowed the money against their own homes. $30,000, in total. I’m glad they did. It was tremendous foresight. Since then, the Nebraska FFA has had a place to call home.

I’m not sure we could, or would, find those individuals today. They risked much. In today’s money, $30K is well over $200,000. Who among us would gamble a third of two hundred grand on a whim? Thank goodness, we don’t have to.

Those who didn’t risk the big money, still devoted time and money to “The FFA Camp”. They painted. They cleaned. They cleared brush. And, they all joined the $5 club.

In 2019, The Leadership Center is again participating in Go Big GIVE. Go Big GIVE is a 24-hour, online giving event organized by the Grand Island Community Foundation and Heartland United Way to grow philanthropy in Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties.

$35.20. That’s today’s value of 1968’s five dollars. That’s all I ask you to consider. Not for what we have done in the past 50 years at The Leadership Center, but for the next fifty. I’ll start. If 100 people join the 2019 version of the $5 Club, we can raise $3520 and be well on our way to The Leadership Center’s $64,000 goal.

To be a part of the 2019 version of the $5 club, visit our page at www.gobiggive.org/5buckclub.

(If you’ve already donated, thank you. If you can give more, please do. If you need more information about The Leadership Center, go to www.tlcaurora.org.)
