When I first arrived here at the Leadership Center, Micheala said to me “we are like an island of misfit toys.” At first, response was bland and emotionless because I didn’t know what to think about that. Now that I’ve been here for a few months, I now understand what she means.

Everyone here has a special role they fulfill. Whether it’s Kurt at the Summer Food Service Program feeding kids, or Paola unclogging toilets, all the work gets done.

TLC is a place where people can be unapologetic for who they are, and that’s what makes the culture here so great. We have management staff that truly cares for and understand their employees needs and problems.

Everyone who comes here will get the great opportunity to meet the one and only Jane. Not only does Jane do some great work, she brings her optimistic and positive attitude to the table. I never fail to crack a smile each day I get to work with her.

Behind Jane, stands a strong team of bold people. Maile, Micheala and Kurt are chugging away, laughing a lot and getting some work done.

Oh, and how could I forget about the kitchen staff. They’re always generously offering to feed everybody. I don’t mind, because the food is pretty tasty. I especially love drowning fresh vegetables in the homemade ranch or when Carrie makes brownies.

Without all of the maintenance crew, we wouldn’t have such a fabulous outdoor space and clean and crisp building. Thanks to them, we can provide a great space for all of our guest’s needs.

This past week, all the staff here at TLC had the chance to have lunch together. It was very refreshing to see all of us come together to have that little bit of time to enjoy a meal with one another. Staff thought it looked like a family supper and in a way, we are kind of like a family.

So, the “island of misfit toys” fits us pretty well. Where one person may lack, someone else comes along to help fulfill that space and offer a helping hand. Not to mention, we all enjoy a laugh each day we are here. It is such a privilege to be able to come into this place and leave in a better mood than when I showed up. Not a lot of people can say that happens every day.

PS, here are some of my favorite lines that have been said frequently here at The Leadership Center.

“It’s all about how you take it.” –Jane

“Have you guys seen Interstellar?” –Probably Dario

“Do you want to help me prank Kurt?” –Paola (I will always answer yes to this)

*says nothing but gives a look* -Mama Bear

“Hey, you guys want some candy?” –Kurt

“Paola is going to hit me with a water balloon.” -Kurt

“Does anyone know where Dario is?” –Jarrett, Jayson, Jacob, John, & Derrick

“I want to take a nap.” -Elizabeth (Me too, Elizabeth)

“I think we should go feed the cats.” –Elizabeth

*always smiling* – Paola

“Abby, you look like you’re tired again.” –Dario

PPS, I also had a special guest appear on this blog who helped write some of this. Chaz had some important insight he wanted to add. He typed: “llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllklllllllllllllllllkklll.”

Well said Chaz, well said.
