nfamiliar territory” (Ken Baker\, Radio Kansas) has gained him a small but
dedicated following across the US and abroad.\n\nDeeply rooted in a lifel
ong love of traditional American musical styles and instrumentation\, John
has developed strong skill across guitar\, the mandolin family\, and claw
hammer banjo\, while following his own course as a songwriter and composer
\, most recently with the ambitious long-form\, multi-instrumental album Y
ellow Threads\, recorded in two unbroken ~20 minute live takes.\n\nHe was
a Walnut Valley Festival New Song Showcase winner in 2021 and Kansas State
Mandolin Champion in 2022. He has performed across the U.S. as a solo art
ist along with occasional appearances of Melmen\, a very off-kilter absurd
ist alter-ego. John’s solo material combines strong influences from bluegr
ass with unusual melodic and rhythmic structures more common to jazz and c
ontemplative\, philosophical songwriting for a deeply unique sound.
